Spirit of the Games

This short video documentary is about the Aberfeldy Games in Scotland 2002, focussing on the Highland Dancing event and following some of the young girls who participate. The highland dancers are said to embody the ‘spirit’ of the games as the dances represent Scottish culture and often have meaning about identity, unity and have much historical significance. The video introduces us to a few of the young girls who take part in Highland dancing and we are shown the traditional costume, shoes, hairstyles and accessories that are an important part of the event - the care and precision that must go into these is emphasised. We see the girls rehearsing with their teacher, Jean Swanson who has been to world championships and numerous competitions herself in the past. We also see some of the girls’ social lives, discussing between themselves what their likes/dislikes are and how they spend their spare time, thus illustrating the highland dancing tradition in a more modern context as well as that of the historical games events.
