In raw audio recordings from largely unedited interviews people from the Leicester area recall life in the East Midlands during the First World War. Some remember the war as children, seeing their fathers go off to Europe, Egypt or India, others give first hand accounts of going away to fight. One man remembers the outbreak of war in 1914 and how many expected it would be over by Christmas. Trench life is recalled, along with the limited food supplies, and the horror of warfare. We are reminded of the lasting effects of mustard gas and shell shock on many of those who served. Women recount the food shortages, long queues for goods and the introduction of margarine. There are also recollections of how many women gained opportunities to do things that only men had done before. The post war social and political landscape is described with one man recalling a tremendous social revolution, the result of people’s disillusion with the war. There is an account of disaffection among troops who had to remain in Europe knowing that the first men home would pick up the best jobs. There are recollections of the first post-war election, and Ramsay MacDonald being chased out of the Market place by an angry crowd for having been a pacifist. There is a relatively high level of tape hiss in the background but the material is audible throughout. The original recording is held by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA ref: 394, L0/014/C14), more information can be found at http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha/. This audio files duration is 43 minutes and 32 seconds.
